Great Community Turn-Out on June 5, 2010
The June 5 MedDrop was the most successful medication
collection yet. Over 2400 cars drove through one of the
three MedDrop sites. Approximately 5600 pounds of
medications were collected. Most encouraging was the
fact that over 630 pounds of controlled medications were
collected, well over twice any previous MedDrop event.
How to get rid of your medicines:
Unwanted,
unused prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines can
be found in every household in the county. We know that
it’s not safe to keep unneeded medicines in the house –
children and others can accidentally take them.
But you’ve also heard that you shouldn’t flush medicines
down the toilet or put them in the trash. We now know
that these medicines are bad for our environment – our
water, our lakes and the animals in them. So... how should you get rid of your medicines? Bring your
unneeded medicine to MedDrop. This free
service is available to all Wisconsin residents.
FAQ
Q: Should my medicines be in their original
containers?
A: If possible, leave your medicines in their original
containers with the drug name readable. One of our
responsibilities is to separate all medicines into
separate waste streams and it helps if we can easily
identify the drug. For privacy, you may cross out your
name and other personal information with a pen or
marker.
Q: What if I dumped all of my drugs into a
plastic bag?
A: We’ll take those too!
Q: I just missed the MedDrop, what do I do?
A: The safest way to dispose of your drugs is to use a
medication take-back program. There are several of these
programs throughout Wisconsin and many of these are
listed on a website managed by the
University of
Wisconsin Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center.
There may be another program in Wisconsin that is
convenient for you. The MedDrop takes place twice a
year, in June and October. You are welcome to hang on to
your medicines until then. If you do not feel safe
keeping the medicines in your home until the next
take-back event, then you should dispose of them as
recommended by the
FDA and the drug manufacturer.
Q: How can I get involved?
A: MedDrop always needs people to help spread pamphlets
and other promotional material, provide education and
volunteer on site. Please send us an
e-mail and let us
know that you are interested.
Q: Your website is out of date, how can I get
find out when the next MedDrop is?
A: Sorry about that! The MedDrop is volunteer run and
sometimes we don’t get around to this! Stay in touch
with MedDrop alerts and updates by signing up for the
email list serv. Once you sign up, you will receive an
email from “Express Email Marketing” asking you to
confirm your intention to be on this list. Once you
confirm you will start to receive emails from the
MedDrop. Generally, we send out about 10 per year.
Q: I know that I’m going to be out of town, can I give
my meds to
someone else to drop off?
A: Use your best judgment.
